Password protect PDF

Choose the PDF, type the password twice and download the protected file. The PDF and the password never leave your device.

One PDF up to 50 MB. The password is added on your device: the file and the password never leave it.

Your file never leaves your device: everything happens in the browser, with no upload to any server.

How to password protect a PDF in 3 steps

  1. Choose the PDF

Tap Choose PDF and pick the file.

  2. Type the password twice

In New password and Repeat the password, with at least 4 characters.

  3. Protect and download

Tap Protect PDF, then Download protected PDF. The file ends with “-protected” in its name.

What it’s for

  • Sending personal documents (ID, proof of address, contracts) by email or WhatsApp without anyone being able to open them.
  • Storing in the cloud a PDF with client data, salaries or amounts.
  • Delivering a report only to whoever gets the password.

A strong password

AES-256 encryption is only as good as the password. Prefer a short phrase with numbers, like “orange7window”, over a birth date. Send the password another way, not in the same message as the PDF.

Your file never leaves your device

The password is added in your browser, in your phone’s or computer’s memory. The PDF and the password never leave your device, and nothing is stored: not even we know the password.

Limits

One PDF up to 50 MB at a time.

Other PDF tools

To remove a password you know, use unlock PDF. To shrink the PDF before protecting it, use compress PDF. To sign the document before sending it, use sign PDF.

Frequently asked questions

What protection does the PDF get?

A password to open it, with AES-256 encryption, the strongest in the PDF format. Without the password, the PDF won’t open in any reader.

I forgot the password I set. Can you recover it?

No. The password isn’t stored anywhere, not even with us. Write it down before sending the file; if you lose it, use the original PDF, which is still on your device without a password.

How does the person who gets it open the PDF?

In their usual PDF reader (on the phone, in the browser or Adobe Reader): it asks for the password. Send the password another way, like a call or a separate message, not with the file.

What password should I use?

At least 4 characters; the longer, the better. Mix words and numbers. For confidential documents, avoid birth dates and full ID numbers, which other people know.

Why type the password twice?

So a typo doesn’t slip by. With the wrong password, not even you could open the PDF later.

Is the password uploaded to a server?

No. The password is added to the PDF by your browser, in your phone’s or computer’s memory. The PDF and the password never leave your device, and nothing is stored.

Can someone with the password print and copy?

Yes. Opening with the password unlocks everything: printing, copying and editing. The content stays the same.

My PDF already has a password. Can I change it?

Yes. Type the current password when asked, then the new one: the new one replaces it. To remove the password for good, use unlock PDF.

Can I protect a Word document?

Yes, in 2 steps: convert it with Word to PDF, then protect the PDF here.

Is there a size limit?

One PDF up to 50 MB at a time, on a phone or a computer.
