Unlock PDF

For your own files: type the password you know and download the PDF without it. We never break passwords.

One PDF up to 50 MB. Only for your own files: we remove the password you know and never break passwords.

Your file never leaves your device: everything happens in the browser, with no upload to any server.

How to unlock a PDF in 3 steps

  1. Choose the PDF

Tap Choose PDF and pick the file.

  2. Type the password you know

If the PDF asks for a password to open, type it and tap Open PDF. If it only has printing or copying restrictions, it won’t ask for anything.

  3. Download the PDF without a password

Tap Download unlocked PDF. The file ends with “-unlocked” in its name.

Only for your own files

This tool is for people who already have the password: the owner of the document or someone who got the password with it, like a bank statement or a payslip. It removes the password so the PDF opens right away. We don’t break passwords or try to guess them: without the right password, the PDF stays closed.

Open password and restrictions

A PDF can have two kinds of protection:

  • Open password: the reader asks for the password before showing any page. Here you type it once, and the unlocked PDF opens without asking.
  • Restrictions: the PDF opens, but won’t let you print, copy text or edit. Those are removed without asking for anything.

After unlocking, the PDF can go to the other tools, like merge PDF and sign PDF. They also ask for the password when a PDF has one, so unlocking first is optional.

Your file never leaves your device

The password is removed in your browser, in your phone’s or computer’s memory. The PDF and the password never leave your device, and nothing is stored. If the PDF won’t open at all, see the guide PDF won’t open or is password protected.

Limits

One PDF up to 50 MB at a time.

Other PDF tools

Frequently asked questions

Do you crack PDF passwords?

No. Only someone who knows the password can unlock a PDF here: you type it, and the PDF comes out without it. We don’t guess or break passwords. If you don’t know the password, ask whoever sent the file.

Why remove the password from a PDF?

So you don’t have to type it every time: the bank statement, bill or payslip that comes with a password opens right away. Also to merge, sign or upload the PDF to a system that doesn’t accept password-protected files.

The PDF opens, but it won't let me print or copy. Can I fix that?

Yes. Those restrictions are removed on their own, without asking for anything: choose the PDF and download the unlocked copy.

What's the password for my bank's PDF?

The bank or company that sent it sets the password. It’s usually written in the email or the app: part of an ID number, a date of birth or an account number. We don’t know or keep any password.

I typed the password and it says it's wrong. What now?

Check upper and lower case letters, accents and numbers. If the password came in writing, copy and paste it from the email. You can try again as many times as you need.

Is the password uploaded to a server?

No. The password and the PDF stay in your browser: unlocking happens in your phone’s or computer’s memory. We don’t keep, log or measure the password.

Does the unlocked PDF change?

No. The content is the same: text, images, links and fields stay the same. Only the encryption is removed.

I want to add another password later. Can I?

Yes. Use protect PDF to add a new password with AES-256 encryption.

Does it work on my phone?

It works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.

What kind of protection won't open here?

Certificate protection (when the PDF is locked for a specific person, not with a password). In that case, ask whoever sent the file for an unprotected copy.
