Compress PDF to 1 MB
With 1 MB set, the tool tries to keep the text and only lowers quality if it has to. All in your browser.
One PDF up to 50 MB and 500 pages.Maximum size: 1 MB. You can change it after choosing the PDF.
Your file never leaves your device: everything happens in the browser, with no upload to any server.
How to compress a PDF to 1 MB in 3 steps
Choose the PDF
Tap Choose PDF. The 1 MB maximum size is already selected.
Tap Compress to 1 MB
Light mode goes first and keeps the text; if it doesn’t fit, the pages become images at the best quality that fits.
Download the PDF
Check the final size and tap Download PDF.
Where the 1 MB limit shows up
A 1 MB limit can show up on support portals, filing systems, application forms and school platforms. Sometimes it’s per file, sometimes for all files together, so check what the site says, because each one sets its own.
1 MB is a lot of room. When a PDF goes over because of large photos inside it, light mode can fix it without touching the text.
Light mode comes first
Light mode doesn’t touch the text. It:
- re-saves the JPG photos inside the PDF at up to 2,000 pixels on the long side and 75% quality;
- removes embedded thumbnails and data some programs store that never shows on the page;
- losslessly compresses anything that wasn’t compressed.
If it’s still over 1 MB, the pages become images, starting at 150 dpi and 75% quality. The tool measures each attempt and stops at the best one that fits, never going below 96 dpi and 40%, the floor where text is still readable.
When it still won’t fit
With many scanned pages, 1 MB may not be enough. The screen shows the smallest size we reached and lets you download that file. What actually works:
- split it into parts with split PDF, one part per attachment;
- remove pages nobody asked for, like blank backs, in organize PDF;
- scan again in grayscale if the document doesn’t need color.
Your file never leaves your device
It all runs in the browser, in your phone’s or computer’s memory. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and closing the page wipes it all.
Other sizes
Smaller limit? Use compress PDF to 500 KB, 200 KB or 100 KB. To choose between light and strong with no limit, compress PDF. Loose photos become a light PDF with JPG to PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my PDF over 1 MB?
What weighs most in a PDF is images: full-resolution phone photos, pages scanned in color, slides exported with image backgrounds. Plain text takes very little space.
Will it lose quality?
Maybe none you can see. Light mode only re-saves the photos inside the PDF at up to 2,000 pixels on the long side, and the text stays text. Only if it doesn’t fit do the pages become images, starting at 150 dpi, which is still sharp on screen.
Is 1 MB 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?
We use 1,000,000 bytes, the stricter count. The file passes on sites that count either way.
Does a 30-page PDF fit in 1 MB?
If it was made on a computer, it may fit in light mode. If it’s 30 scanned pages, each one becomes an image and shares the 1 MB with the others; with many pages it may not fit, and the screen shows the smallest size we reached. In that case, split it into parts with split PDF.
Can I compress a slide deck exported to PDF?
Yes. Slides can have big photos, and light mode shrinks each one. If you still have the original file, shrinking the images in that program before exporting gives an even better result.
What happens to links and the table of contents?
In light mode, they keep working. If the pages have to become images, links and form fields stop working, and the screen warns you.
Is the file uploaded to a server?
No. Compression happens in your browser: the PDF never leaves your device and isn’t stored.
What if my limit is 2 MB or another number?
After choosing the PDF, tap 2 MB or Other and type your limit, in KB or MB.
