How to compress a PDF to 500 KB in 3 steps
Choose the PDF
Tap Choose PDF. The 500 KB maximum size is already selected.
Tap Compress to 500 KB
The tool tries light mode, which keeps the text, and only turns pages into images if it has to.
Download the PDF
Check the final size and whether the text stayed text, then tap Download PDF.
What the 500 KB limit is for
A 500 KB limit can show up on job sites, school platforms, registration systems and forms that take a single file with several documents inside. The exact number varies from site to site, so check what the upload field says.
With 500 KB, a document made on a computer has a good chance of fitting with its text intact. What weighs is the images: a photo on the résumé, a high-resolution logo, scanned pages.
Résumés: keep the text
A résumé turned into images still looks good, but it loses what matters most: the text. The reader can’t copy your email or search for a word, and software that reads the file sees nothing. That’s why the tool tries light mode first and tells you when it had to turn the pages into images.
If your résumé only fits as images, go back to your editor and:
- shrink the photo before placing it in the document;
- remove decorative images, large icons and background images;
- export to PDF again and try here once more.
Contracts and scanned documents
A contract signed on paper and scanned is already a series of photos. Here, turning the pages into lower-resolution images doesn’t take away anything it had. With several pages, the tool shares the 500 KB between them: the more pages, the less sharp each one, never below the 96 dpi floor.
If the system takes more than one file, send the contract in parts with split PDF. If pages are missing or out of order, fix that first in organize PDF.
Your file never leaves your device
The PDF is opened and compressed in your phone’s or computer’s memory, with nothing uploaded. Nothing is stored: closing the page wipes it all.
Other sizes
For smaller limits, compress PDF to 200 KB or to 100 KB. With more room, compress PDF to 1 MB. With no set limit, use compress PDF with light and strong modes.
Frequently asked questions
Will my résumé keep selectable text?
If it fits in light mode, yes, and that’s what the tool tries first. What weighs most in a résumé made in Word or Google Docs is photos and embedded fonts; light mode shrinks the photos and keeps the text.
Why does it matter that the text stays text?
Because whoever gets it can copy a line, search for a word and read it on a phone at any text size. Software that reads the file’s content also only sees what’s text. A PDF turned into images has no text at all to read.
What if it only fits as images?
The result tells you. For a résumé, it’s worth shrinking the photo or removing decorative images in your editor and exporting the PDF again first. For a scanned contract, images change nothing: it already was an image.
Does a multi-page contract fit in 500 KB?
It depends on how it was made. Made on a computer, it may fit and keep its text. Scanned, every page is a photo: with many pages, the tool lowers the resolution to fit, down to the 96 dpi floor. The screen shows the result before you download.
Do links and form fields keep working?
In light mode, yes. If the pages become images, links and fields stop working, and the screen warns you.
Is 500 KB 500,000 bytes?
Yes. We count in thousands, the stricter way, so the file passes on any site with that limit.
Is the file uploaded to a server?
No. Everything happens in your browser: the PDF never leaves your device and isn’t stored.
Can I pick a different size?
Yes. After choosing the PDF, tap another ready-made size or Other and type it in KB or MB, from 20 KB to 50 MB.
